Nelson is a city of charm and energy, based on the harbour that now houses the busiest fishing port in New Zealand. It was named Whakatu by Ra Kai Hau Tu who came here in the canoe Uruao, and later Pohea established Matangi Awhio pa on the harbour edge. The New Zealand Company established its second settlement here in 1842, a town that has grown with later influxes of settlers and artists but retains much of its old character.

Walking trails trace the built and planted heritage around the inner city, and interesting drives head north and south, including the Nelson Provincial Museum. The Nelson region is well known for the number of full time artists living and working here and the outstanding quality of work produced. From 8 o'clock Saturday morning, the Nelson Market is humming -- for locals and visitors alike it is an experience to be enjoyed at any pace.

Allow a couple of days to visit these attractions and many others.
