Motueka's museum and waterfront offer interesting insights into the past lives of this rivermouth settlement. The trip over Takaka Hill to Golden Bay passes unusual karst landforms, amongst them Riwaka Resurgence, Harwoods Hole, and a collection of lookouts, caves and bluffs. Allow half a day.

Side trail: Marahau This turn-off takes you through Kaiteriteri to Marahau and Abel Tasman National Park - best known for its golden beaches and famous walking track. Allow half a day - more if you take a walk or boat trip into the park.

Side trail: Cobb Valley This side trail leaves the main pathway at Upper Takaka, and winds past the Cobb power scheme into Kahurangi National Park and the glacier-carved grandeur of the Cobb valley. Allow most of a day or spend a night in the park.
